For green policies and initiatives in sustainable development issues awards winned the municipalities of Syros, Amorgos, Ios, Kea, Korthi, Milos, Moudros (Lemnos) and the Community of Oia on Santorini.
The certification was made by the group set up by the professor of the National Technical University Mr. Kimon Hatziibiros in the functioning of the Sustainable DAFNE Aegean Islands.
Some of the actions endorsed by the Committee assessed the environmental initiatives of the Cycladic islands is an integrated solid waste management (Amorgos), the management of water and wastewater (Kea), enhanced recycling of waste (Kea), the expansion of desalination plant with wind (Milos), the complete development plan (Posidonia), the composting of household waste (Posidonia), the underground electrical system, electric cars (Oia), etc.
During the event, the government came out itself on favour of desalination plants on the islands with the use of wind power down through the deputy minister responsible for Infrastructure, Transport and Networks.
Mr. Nikos Sifounakis, responsible on Insular Affairs, spoke about the spread of desalination technique as it can provide valuable resources to the public because of the high cost of old-fashioned practice of transporting a sodden. Mr. Sifunakis stated that the use of renewables to address water scarcity may make it cheaper by 7.5 per cubic meter of water.
DAPHNE network began operating in 2006, after a meeting sensitized environmental citizens, academics and local authority actors in the Aegean.
Then adopted and supported by George Poussaios, former mayor of Ios, now Secretary for Tourism, who hosted DAFNE in the island of Ios and later contributed decisively to the creation of the Energy Bureau of the Aegean.
The Chair of the Network of Daphne for the next four years assumed by the Community of Oia, which also boasts rich work.
