Construction of the new shelter at Akrotiri Archaeological Site began. According to the constucting company, the project should be completed in the first quarter of 2011. However, doubts about the timing expressed by scientists.
'Things have taken their course,' said the shelter architect Nikos Fintikakis, but he felt that the above time to complete the project is small. 'The process is not simple. First must the space-frames located above be removed and then the columns of the roof to expose the bearings, which are mounted at their base. These will be replaced with new and then construction will resume, first in the columns after the space-frames' he said. Project will proceed with the dismantling and rebuilding of specific parts, with width 6-7 meters and a length of 60-70 meters. They are totally 14 parts and according to his calculations, the construction of each one requires 15 days of working, but preparation for each one takes approximately two months.
Note also that the anti-seismic bearings that ensure optimal behavior of structures to strong vibrations are produced abroad. Another factor that has to do with the time the weather is as ancient exhibits can not be left uncovered in case of rain. Implementation studies are also pending and under corrections a British company has undertaken.
Skeptical as to the date of completion of the project is the Archaeologist of Akrotiri, Professor Christos Doumas. Moreover, as noted, 'the museological study must be completed as well, since the Akrotiri archaeological work stopped on the day of the accident'.
