Skaros the oldest castle or fortress Up or Roka (rock) was built in later years Byzantine, by eneto Iakovo Varotsi, which were Santorini in 1207. He and his noble used as office and residence. Around and beneath the upper castle built entire settlement, kasteli of Skaros, one of the five kastelia of Santorini. A key element of the building was almost universal use of stone. At the entrance there was a movable wooden bridge, from the basis of which remains still exist today. We never alothike throughout Venetian sovereignty. The abandonment of Skaros began in early 17 th century. Suffered heavy damage from the explosion of 1650 in the submarine volcano Koloumpo and later by the earthquake of 1817, so that now survive only slightly ruins. In addition, residents during the withdrawal from the village, take over and materials for use in the manufacture of their new homes in other parts of the island. The Skaros was the capital of Santorini until the 18 th century and residents called kastrinoi. The only accurate picture Skaro exists on the project is in pencil, which belongs to the collection of Thomas Hope and is at the Benaki Museum.
